Misdiagnosis Risk: Many patients with Hashimoto’s are either undiagnosed or given T4-only treatments like Synthroid, which may not fully resolve symptoms. Testing for TPO (Thyroid Peroxidase) and TG (Thyroglobulin) antibodies is essential for proper diagnosis.
Conversion Issues: In some cases, T4 is not effectively converted to T3, leaving the patient with hypothyroid symptoms even if TSH and T4 levels appear normal.
Causes: Factors such as liver inflammation, gut dysfunction, iodine deficiency, and stress can impede this conversion.
Prevalence: Iodine deficiency is widespread due to environmental exposure to chlorine, fluorine, and bromine, which block iodine absorption.
Role in Thyroid Health: Iodine is a key component of thyroid hormones, and a deficiency can prevent proper T4 to T3 conversion.
Excessive Hormone Binding: Certain proteins, such as Thyroid Binding Globulin (TBG), bind to thyroid hormones, reducing the levels of active Free T3 and Free T4 available to enter cells.
Estrogen's Role: Elevated estrogen levels can increase the production of binding proteins, exacerbating thyroid dysfunction.
Over-medication Risk: Excessive doses of thyroid hormones can lead to resistance, where cells become less responsive to hormone signals. This is particularly common in elderly patients and can cause symptoms like palpitations, insomnia, and anxiety.
