What is ONDAMED® Biofeedback System
ONDAMED® is a battery-powered biofeedback device that a medical practitioner uses to determine which frequencies of sound, as well as the accompanying weak pulsed electromagnetic fields, cause a response in a patient’s autonomic nervous system. Temporary stimulation by these frequencies, combined with the patient’s cognitive and non-cognitive participation, promotes relaxation, muscle re-education, and rehabilitation that returns the patient to a state of wellness.
Therapists throughout Europe have been using ONDAMED® for over 10 years with great success. Rolf Binder, the inventor of ONDAMED, has been in the field of Information Technology and Medical Electronics for more than 20 years. Specializing in biophysical medical testing and therapy application, Binder has invented numerous well-known medical devices for German medical equipment manufacturers, including Medtronic. In 1993 he decided to start his own company Binder GmbH and in 2002 opened its US subsidiary, Ondamed Inc. in order to reach a wider audience.
Frequently asked questions about the Device:
Q & A Session I with Rolf Binder, the inventor of ONDAMED® |
Q: |
How big is the device? |
A: |
The base unit dimensions are 4″h x 18.5″l x 14″d or 105mm (H) x 470mm (B) x 360mm (T). The weight of the System in a hard shell case is approximately 27 lbs or 12kg. |
Q: |
What principle is this device based on? |
A: |
The ONDAMED® Biofeedback System is based on the principles of biophysics. An Electromagnetic impulse is a physical parameter. The effect of these impulses is based on induction. |
Q: |
What type of frequency is being used? |
A: |
ONDAMED® is using electromagnetic impulse waves, very different from other devices that might be using radio frequencies or microwave frequencies. An electromagnetic impulse creates a stepwise change of the magnetic field strength. Due to the brief impulse, the electromagnetic field in the organism quickly returns to its original value. When penetrating the organism, the impulse prompts a counter impulse within the cell tissues and thereby stimulating a self-regulating response in the body. |
Q: |
What is the frequency intensity? |
A: |
The intensity describes the pulsation level. When the intensity becomes stronger, the electromagnetic impulse intensifies and penetrates deeper into the organism. |

Q & A Session II with Rolf Binder, the inventor of ONDAMED® |
Q: |
How did you come up with the concept for the ONDAMED® technology? |
A: |
The idea for ONDAMED® is the result of my 20 years of developing different bio-energetic medical devices in Germany. By being involved in various diagnostic and treatment modalities I discovered flaws based on the actual physical explanation of these concepts which inspired me to create the ONDAMED®. |
Q: |
What actually happens during the ONDAMED® application? |
A: |
During the ONDAMED® application various applicators produce specific frequencies which create a vibration around and within the cells. The cell vibration causes a regulating effect by excreting accumulated toxins and waste, thereby improving the immune and lymphatic system, the metabolism, circulation, and special central nervous system related protocols increase the ability to handle emotional and physical stress. |
Q: |
What is the main difference between the ONDAMED® Biofeedback System and other frequency devices? |
A: |
There are a number of differences. The main distinction is that ONDAMED® is a combination between physical therapy and specific whole-body analysis through the pulse feedback application (V.A.S.). Within minutes the therapist knows the frequencies or preset protocols that are most significant for the patient. These patient specific frequencies or protocols are used to scan the patient’s body for finding the most critical blockages and interference fields which are being released and thereby causing a body regulating effect during the scanning process. The ONDAMED® induces a positive attitude to life physically, emotionally, and spiritually. |

Q & A Session III with Rolf Binder, the inventor of ONDAMED® |
Q: |
You are combining your medical technology with the well established V.A.S. (vascular autonomic signal) or the pulse feedback according to the French physicist Nogier. Therapists pay thousands of dollars and spend years to learn the application of the V.A.S. How do you overcome this challenge? |
A: |
Good question. I have met a lot of people over the years that had problems with learning and applying the V.A.S. This process does not have to be as difficult. When you introduce an electromagnetic field into the patient’s body and simultaneously feel the V.A.S., the pulse signal becomes more pronounced. Therapists usually feel the V.A.S. response almost instantly. |
Q: |
How is it possible that you are able to test 15 different frequencies on your patient using the V.A.S. in less than 1 second considering that the pulse beat changes only every second? |
A: |
The pulse feedback is not dependant on the heartbeat. Rather, there is a very speedy response from the autonomic nervous system which prompts a change of the blood flow in the vessels. The ONDAMED® frequencies to which the patients resonate are causing an instantaneous reaction in the vessel wall, which the therapist feels in form of an increase in the pulse’s intensity, a “jerking” or a “spasm”. |
Q: |
It would seem that the pulse test is rather subjective. Do you have any plans to automate the V.A.S. feedback in the near future? |
A: |
Everything is subjective. We have proven to conventional clinicians at University Clinics in New York as well as Philadelphia that the pulse change can be felt by several physicians and nurses simultaneously. The V.A.S. testing method combined with the ONDAMED® has been verified with ease and great success for ten years. We are always working on improving our existing technology; but remember, nothing compares to the human touch. |

Q & A Session IV with Rolf Binder, the inventor of ONDAMED® |
Q: |
Rolf, you have developed several different medical technologies over the past 20 years. Your greatest achievement by far is the ONDAMED® System. Tell us, why is your focus on frequency applications? |
A: |
It is not only about applying frequencies. Let’s back up for a moment. We need to remember that “frequency is the repetition of an action within a time unit”. The term frequency application is a loose term and can mean many different things. In the case of ONDAMED® we use electromagnetic impulse rates. This specific form of frequency application is an effective way to create a reaction in the body by causing a cellular vibration. From my point of view, this type of stimulation is the most direct way to reach the different levels within the body including: skin, tissue and connective tissue, vessels, organs, etc. (not to forget the emotional layers). |
Q: |
Makes a lot of sense. How did you get to the different frequencies used in the ONDAMED®? |
A: |
The individual frequencies we based on a variety of different research papers and books compiled from international sources. The ONDAMED® frequency matrix is based on a mathematical formula, which also includes the brainwave area, sound and tone harmony. Based on the frequency matrix we designed preset protocols addressing different body regulating events. |
Q: |
How do I as the therapist know what frequency or preset protocol to select? |
A: |
The patient’s pulse response will direct the way. Remember, that we are working with a constantly changing target, the biological organism. The combination ONDAMED® and the patient’s pulse feedback to incoming frequencies is the simplest and most accurate way we currently know of to capture the patient’s response at any given time. This method answers 3 fundamental questions: WHAT (frequency or preset protocol), WHERE (interference fields in the body) and HOW (the intensity of waves); to ensure the most effective approach for the patient. |

Q & A Session V with Rolf Binder, the inventor of ONDAMED® |
Q: |
I wish to continue our previous interview, which was published in EXPLORE’s last issue. You discussed Bioresonance therapy, which is widely accepted and used throughout Europe. In continuation, I would like for you to explain what you mean by saying that this type of therapy is based on placebo effect. |
A: |
Let’s first look at the meaning of placebo. What does it mean and what is the effect? The dictionary would tell us that placebo would replicate the taste and looks of a real pharmaceutical drug without the chemical ingredients, but working on the basis of the power of the suggestion. The same principle applies to equipment. Now let’s remember that the drug or the equipment is reinforced by an individual, like the therapist or pharmacist. The effect may be the same, if working with or without placebo. Bioresonance or electric testing methods of substances have no true physical explanation. As an electronics engineer I am telling you that the workings of such procedures are not possible; however, the effects are. This leads me right into saying that these devices and procedures are effective placebos. |
Q: |
Is your ONDAMED® System also based on placebo? |
A: |
ONDAMED® differs. My experience is based on many years of working with placebo based applications. With ONDAMED® we are working with very effective and measurable impulse frequencies including the individual reactions of patients to ONDAMED® frequencies. The patient is the center of the therapy and the therapist responds to the patient’s reactions; knowing what specific frequencies to use and where to focus such frequencies on the body stimulating a therapeutic effect on body, mind and spirit. I believe that a modern physically effective therapy includes all elements of human therapeutic approaches: Body, mind and spirit have to be reprogrammed to not only want but believe that healing can and will occur. A true therapist becomes a coach, assisting the patient out of the “maze of disorder”. |
Q: |
Do I understand you correctly that you believe in the combination of placebo and physical treatment? |
A: |
Quite right. Placebo supports the mind in order for the body to better accept the healing journey. ONDAMED® beautifully incorporates the placebo by increasing the therapist’s perception of the patient’s status and changes to health by 1) touching the patient, 2) feeling the pulse changes, 3) listening to the patient’s comments and observing emotional release 4) responding verbally and potentially through the subconscious. All this and more WHILE applying a true therapy based on electromagnetic impulses. Again, I believe the optimum healing takes place when we combine an effective physical therapy and an effective placebo. |
